KLM Celebrates 90 Years of Air Service to Curaçao

WILLEMSTAD – KLM is celebrating the 90th anniversary of its air service to Curaçao, which began on December 15, 1934, with the ‘Snip’, a modified Fokker aircraft. This route has a rich history with the Netherlands and remains economically viable, despite growing competition from airlines like TUI and Corendon, reports Telegraaf.

In 2023, the route generated nearly 500 million euros, accounting for 5 percent of KLM’s total revenue. Over the years, the connection has evolved, from pioneering long travel times to increasing passenger numbers with the introduction of jet engines. The COVID-19 crisis gave KLM an opportunity to increase flight frequency to Curaçao, with local manager Danilo de Freijtas referring to the route as a lifeline for the island, essential for students and tourism.

Although the Curaçao government expressed concerns about declining flight frequencies at the end of 2022, KLM remains optimistic about its role in the island’s air transport. The airline highlights its early collaboration with the Dutch military and the continued growth of the route network as evidence of the long-term and resilient value of the connection.

To mark this milestone, KLM will host a reception for invited guests at the Curaçao Museum on Sunday.
