Soaked Weekend Honors Curaçao’s LGBTQ+ Roots During Global Pride Month

WILLEMSTAD - While Curaçao officially celebrates Curaçao Pride each September/October, the month of June is internationally recognized as Pride Month, commemorating the global LGBTQ+ movement for visibility, equality, and celebration. This year, we wanted to mark the moment with something special for our local community — something meaningful, festive, and rooted in our own story.

Enter Soaked Weekend, a series of events taking place from June 6 to 8, designed to bring people together in joy, reflection, and connection. It’s a weekend that both celebrates how far we’ve come and honors where we started.

What many may not realize is that before Curaçao Pride became the island-wide celebration we know today, there was Get Wet Weekend — a trailblazing LGBTQ+ event that began in 2004. While queer gatherings existed before then, Get Wet was the first to truly put our island on the map as an LGBTQ+ destination. That weekend of celebration and connection laid the foundation for what would evolve into Curaçao Pride nearly a decade later.

Soaked Weekend pays tribute to that legacy — not by replicating it, but by reimagining what community-centered Pride can look like today. With a mix of casual gatherings and intentional storytelling, the weekend invites participants to not only celebrate progress, but also recognize and preserve the roots of our local movement.

This year’s program includes:

Mingle Happy Hour at Papagayo Beach Club (Fri June 6, 7–11PM)
 – Featuring a special performance by Ebony Noir, with free entrance and relaxed beachside vibes.

Queer History Tour in Otrobanda (Sat June 7, afternoon)
 – Led by local guide Nelly Rosa, this walking tour includes stops at two queer-owned landmarks for refreshments and conversation.

WE EXTRA TONITE at GAZE Bar & Lounge (Sat June 7, 10PM–3AM)
 – A sexy, high-energy beachwear party celebrating bold expression and community.

Beach, Please! at Que Tapa Beach Bar (Sun June 8, 11AM–sunset)
 – A calm, come-as-you-are beach day open to all. No programming, no pressure — just sun, sea, and queer joy.

Soaked Weekend isn’t just a party — it’s a chance to connect, look back, and move forward. In a time when queer communities across the world continue to face challenges, taking pride in our progress and preserving our history is more important than ever.

We invite the public, allies, and visitors to join us! www.curacaopride.org
