WILLEMSTAD - Following its success in Deventer, The Lemon Tree has expanded to the Caribbean, officially opening its doors in the Art Hotel in Pietermaai on December 25. Situated in a stunning venue designed by renowned architect Piet Boon, The Lemon Tree Curaçao introduces a fresh take on casual fine dining, with a strong emphasis on local flavors.
Celebrating Local and Fresh Ingredients
The Lemon Tree Curaçao prides itself on using fresh, locally sourced ingredients from farmers and hofi’s (gardens) on the island. “With ingredients grown on Curaçao soil, we can deliver an authentic culinary experience that is truly unique,” said head chef Ayron Pieters. Under his guidance, the restaurant crafts sophisticated dishes that elevate the rich flavors of the island.
Enhancing the dining experience, guests are offered a special storybook detailing the origins of each dish. From the farmers cultivating local vegetables to the fishermen supplying fresh seafood, the storybook connects diners with the community and culture behind their meals. “We want our guests not only to savor the flavors but also to feel a deep connection with the island and its people,” Ayron added.
Returning to Curaçao
The expansion to Curaçao is spearheaded by Kiki van der Reijken and Valentijn Bergers. Valentijn, who lived on the island during his culinary training, expressed his excitement about returning: “It’s a dream come true to come back to Curaçao and collaborate with the local community to write a new culinary chapter.”
Kiki, who recently moved to Curaçao with her family, shared her vision: “With our passion for gastronomy and entrepreneurship, we aim to offer a unique dining experience that blends international sophistication with local influences.”
In addition, Vince ten Dijk, based in the Netherlands, plays a crucial role in maintaining consistency between The Lemon Tree’s two locations. “It’s incredible to see how our vision for sustainability and hospitality is embraced in both Deventer and Curaçao,” Vince remarked.
Overcoming Challenges
Launching a restaurant on Curaçao came with its own set of challenges, from delays in importing materials to building relationships with local suppliers. “We wanted a design that truly fits the spirit of Curaçao, but it was challenging to get everything ready on time,” said Valentijn Bergers.
With project manager Berber Bijlsma coordinating efforts from the Netherlands and on-site, the team overcame obstacles to bring the vision to life. Together with Asiades, a furniture manufacturer, they created pieces that perfectly complement the warm, tropical ambiance of The Lemon Tree.
More Than Fine Dining
In addition to the fine dining experience at The Lemon Tree in Pietermaai, two other ventures are on the horizon. Lamunchi, an urban food bar with a lively, accessible atmosphere, is set to open in a historic building. Soon after, The Lemon Beach will debut—a boutique ocean club featuring direct sea access and an infinity pool.
