The Curaçao Carnival is just a month away so it's time to make some last-minute bookings to enjoy some of the Caribbean's best diving at the same time as one of its biggest carnivals – with the opportunity to take a free Project AWARE Dive Against Debris specialty course along with it, and the chance to win a 5-day independent shore diving package for two people. Over the years, Curaçao's Carnival has become one of the longest and largest celebrations in the region. This year, the main festival commences on 24 February with the Children's Parade, and culminates with the 'Gran Marcha', Grand Carnival Parade on 3 March. Other highlights include the Teen Parade and also the Banda Abou Carnival, a celebratory parade through some of Curaçao's rural areas.
The bright colours of the carnival match the reefs of one of the rising stars for Caribbean scuba diving, regularly receiving awards for its spectacular diving and cultural heritage. Curaçao was nominated in the Top 25 diving destinations in the world in the 2018 DIVE Travel Awards, receiving more votes than other Caribbean destinations by a wide margin. The famous wreck of the Superior Producer is likewise considered to be one of the best in the world.
The island's dive community has received the highest praise from PADI for its commitment to conservation through the Project Aware 'Adopt a Dive Site' initiative. Fourteen of the island's dive sites have so far been adopted, with more expected to follow, and regular beach and reef-cleanups are now a part of the island way of life.
