PHILIPSBURG - The airline Winair is receiving assistance from the government of Sint Maarten to establish a permanent expansion of flights between Curaçao and Sint Maarten, announced Acting Minister of Traffic, Grisha Heyliger-Marten.
Following the bankruptcy of JetAir, serious disruptions occurred in air travel between Curaçao and Sint Maarten. Consequently, Winair was granted permission to operate four additional flights per week between the islands for a limited period of two weeks.
However, Minister Heyliger-Marten emphasized that this temporary arrangement is inadequate. Therefore, the government of Sint Maarten is willing to transform this arrangement into a permanent solution. Winair is prepared to continue operating the additional four flights per week throughout the summer vacation period, which has recently commenced, and not just for the next two weeks.
Protocol
According to the Minister of Sint Maarten, this initiative aligns with the multilateral protocol signed by Curaçao and Sint Maarten since 2012, allowing flexibility in flight frequencies between the islands without imposed restrictions.
This collaborative effort aims to stabilize and enhance air connectivity between Curaçao and Sint Maarten, facilitating smoother travel and bolstering economic ties between the two nations.
