Booi and Elhage prosecuted for fraud and corruption

KRALENDIJK - The Public Prosecutor may continue its research in the fraud case against Ramonsito Booi and Burney El Hage in Bonaire. In this 'Zambezi' case, the former politician Booi and current commissioner of Economic Development El Hage are suspected of fraud and corruption. They can now be officially prosecuted.

That was determined by the Common Court of Justice on Thursday in a closed session of the Council Chamber.

There is not much left of the extensive record in this case according to attorney Gelmar Peter. Burney Elhage can only be prosecuted in connection with a mortgage fraud that he allegedly committed with his house at Kaya Finlandia in Kralendijk. Former politician Ramoncito Booi is suspected of forgery in a land deal in Kralendijk.

Fundashon Bon Gobernashon (Good Governance Foundation) in Bonaire called for research into the Zambezi case. The foundation has published in 2007 a "black book" which in 2009 led to a major investigation by the Public Prosecutor and the National Police. There were raids at the suspects’ house. Many documents were confiscated. There was even assistance requested from Aruba and the United States.

To everyone's surprise, the district court ordered the dismissal of the case at the height of the investigation. The Foundation then went in appeal and with success because of the interlocutory judgment of Thursday, the investigation will be resumed.
