Grenada general election set for February 19

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada – General elections in Grenada will be held on Tuesday, February 19.

The date was announced at a Sunday evening rally of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) by party leader and prime minister, Tillman Thomas.

“The time is right to seek a new mandate from the people of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique,’’ he said. “With God’s grace and guidance, we shall be victorious.’’

Parliament, which was prorogued in September, was dissolved last week, paving the way for the general election announcement.

At the dissolution of parliament, the NDC – which won 11 of 15 seats at elections in 2008 – held just six, with four by the main opposition New National Party.

Five other parliamentarians – who won their seats as NDC MPs – were sitting in the House of Representatives as backbenchers.
