A quarter of Curaçao residents are suffering from obesity

obesity 1WILLEMSTAD – On Curacao over a quarter of the population is obese. This scores the Caribbean island just below the worldwide leader the United States. This is evident from the results of the first report of the National Health Curaçao in 2013, which was presented on Wednesday.

This report also shows that about two out of three inhabitants of the island are overweight, or have a so-called BMI (body mass index) of 25 or higher. This is according to research ‘average’ compared to other countries with a Western epidemiological profile. The number of obese people with a BMI of 30, is remarkably high.

The population itself seems to have no trouble with overweight. Three-quarters of adults in Curacao are in fact positive about their health.

The study was performed earlier this year under three thousand persons aged 18 and older and the government should help in determining a policy in the field of health.
