“Appeltjes van Oranje” brings together people with and without handicaps

The Oranje Fonds seeks existing successful and innovative initiatives

Oranje fondsUTRECHT, The Netherlands - Better Together is the theme for the “Appeltjes van Oranje 2014”. Receiving this award will be the crowning moment for three successful social initiatives that bring together people with and without handicaps. The Oranje Fonds is inviting organizations to nominate their own initiatives for the award. The “Appeltjes van Oranje” are presented annually by Queen Máxima, patroness of the Oranje Fonds. The “Appeltjes van Oranje” are the most prestigious award of its kind in the social domain.

In 2014, the “Appeltjes van Oranje” will be awarded for 12th time. This year, adopting the theme “Better Together”, the Oranje Fonds seeks social initiatives that endeavour to bring together groups of people with and without handicaps. Says Ronald van der Giessen, managing director of the Oranje Fonds: “The fund aims to forge lasting relationships between people who would not normally encounter each other. We hope to receive many applications of extraordinary initiatives with this same goal. These could be, for example, a buddy project that teams up students with peers that have a handicap, or people doing odd jobs for their less mobile neighbours.”

The “Appeltjes van Orange” are awarded annually to exceptional projects that work towards improved unity between the different layers of society and towards a more liveable community. The award consists of a bronze statue that was designed and fashioned by Princess Beatrix, and a monetary prize of €15.000,-.

The Oranje Fonds supports social initiatives with subsidies, know-how and contacts. This past year €30 million was spent to fund organizations promoting a more engaged society in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. These contributions help people connect or re-establish themselves in society. The Oranje Fonds is sponsored by the Nationale Postcode Loterij and De Lotto as well as by friends and businesses. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima have been the official patrons of the Oranje Fonds since its inception.

Nominations can be submitted with the Oranje Fonds until 30 September 2013. See
