Curacao Airport Holding rescues plantation house Hato

landhuis-drecha-2-300x200WILLEMSTAD – Curacao Airport Holding (CAH) rescues the historic plantation house Hato. The intention is to use this house as a restaurant and boutique hotel, according to CAH. This plantation house is about 50 meters north of the airport road. In this area there is a terrace, the remains of a water reservoir, wells, an irrigation system and a small cemetery with seven graves. This plantation house is considered a cultural heritage with architectural value and a major cultural value for Curacao.

This plantation house was once one of the biggest animal farms on the island with about two thousand acres of land. It was well known for its wells. Considering its importance for the island, CAH has done its utmost to keep this house in good shape.

CAH is currently working to make this entire area a green park in which the geographical, archeological and cultural value will be kept. This site will be accessible to the public and be available for educational purposes. In these plans there are also the maintenance of the Roi Rincon (another park nearby), the Hato caves and other areas around the airport. The green park is an essential part of the Airport City Master Plan.

After the restoration of the plantation house is done, CAH Director, Mr. Maurice Adriaens led a tour of the building with the Board of Supervisors. Soon CAH will initiate the process to find an operator for the restaurant and the hotel.
