Operation: Closet Detox

2012 will go down in the history books. The year of overdoses of graphic prints, the year Alexander Wang took over the house of Balenciaga, the year that H&M had more collaboration then Nicki Minaj’s music album and the year that Chanel, remained Chanel.

What are your new year’s resolutions? Curse less, better eating habits, visiting the fitness center more often or a shot at love?

We tend to make lists full of promises for the new year, forgetting about the big fat over packed messy double  door money sucker called the CLOSET.

What have you done for her lately?

There isn’t an inch space left but surprisingly there is always room for one more dress or one more pair of heels and in the same breath half of your closet is most likely unused and untouched.

By taking out everything you don’t wear and reconsidering the possibilities of what you already have, you give your closet a deep well deserved detox session. A new year, a new closet, a newer you…This is the right time and the perfect moment.

I know it’s hard and painful to take items out but why keep those items you don’t use if you don’t own a vintage store, so out with the old.

And the dress you bought a size smaller, hoping it would fit you after dieting is only going to complicate stuff, so put it where it belongs… in the trash bin.

Contrary to what most people think, you don’t need a lot of clothes to be well dressed. The Number 1 key is having a well-edited closet, certain items stay in style year after year. These are the timeless classics every woman should have in her wardrobe. Make sure your closet is secured with these basics. If you have it, you should keep and if you don’t you should go out and get it.

# 1: The trench coat

The all time never out of style coat, best reserved for rainy days and chilly weather. To avoid looking like inspector gadget: Choose a well-tailored option that hits right at (or below) the knee for a more polished look.

# 2: The little black dress:

The most diverse piece in the closet, it can be worn with a jacket and pumps for daytime business wear or with more flashy chunky jewelry and accessories for an evening out, lounging with friends.

# 3: The Killer heel:

Invest in some sky-high feet killers. Believe it or not, heels make or break the outfit. I know what you’re thinking “yeah yeah, who’s going to break their neck?”. Well a tip, men like girls who rock heels, so suck it up and work them out.

# 4 The sophisticated white shirt:

Think of a white button-up blouse as your upper body's version of black pants. It's versatile enough to wear anywhere, with almost anything. Pair it over denim with ballerina’s for a weekend getaway or with your favorite pants for a day at work or school.

# 5 Fabulous-fitting jeans:

Denim designers create styles with specific body types in mind and the key to finding a perfect fit is understanding which styles are made just for you.

You don’t have to squish, squat, bend and shove your body into denim because you’re going to end up looking like an overfilled grocery bag. There’s a brand that will fit you perfectly. Whether faded or tailored, the right pair of jeans will make you feel super-sexy every minute you wear them.

# 6 The Fitted blazer:

Get a classic blazer in a neutral color (grey, dark blue or black) when you want your blazer to serve many purposes. Dress up or down with other accessories. Blazers should fit snugly without being overly tight or loose at the shoulders. A blazer can be worn with denim and shoes or with pants for more casual occasions.

# 7 Jewelry you love, simple but striking:

Jewelry can give everyday basics a new life. Finish off any look, for example, with a pair of simple gold hoops. Remember less is more, if you opt for a large, chunky necklace, skip the earrings altogether. Jewelry is a complementary for your outfit, play with color pallets. Perfectly matching everything together is so 1997.

# 8 The arm candy:

Accessorize your evening wardrobe with a sleek, compact bag that's just big enough to hold your keys, cash and cell phone, and I do mean just your keys, cash and cellphone. Your clutch isn’t a duffle bag so leave the backdoor key, Dentyne ice pack and all extras in the car or at home.

Now that you’re done, you are going to be amazed by all the amazing finds that were buried in the back of the closet. Be nice to your closet, it caries half of your personal image. The best books are not judged by their covers, but the bestsellers are ❤
