Rock climbers: Curaçao could become the #1 destination in the Caribbean for rock climbing

P1100286WILLEMSTAD - Curaçao has the potential of becoming the number one destination in the Caribbean for rock climbers. The island's sunny, dry climate and easy access to several rock walls could turn Curaçao into a mecca for rock climbing. The hills called the three brothers, Zwarte Berg, Jack Everts and Veerisberg offer endless opportunities for climbers of every skill level, from beginners to seasoned, wall-crawling veterans.

There are also other spots on the island that offer rock climbers what they are looking for. Climbers looking for un-roped adventure will have a blast scrambling up and over the short,P1100291 steep boulders in the airport area called Roi Rincon. These clusters of boulders make great practice sites for beginners who want to hone their skills.

There are two avid rock climbers behind this project. Curaçao Chronicle had the opportunity to talk to Sergio Ramos and Wilmer David Juarez. These two with their contagious enthusiasm showed us their work of setting up the various routes and even naming them for a future reference guide. “I’ve done rock climbing for almost 25 years now and I’ve been everywhere in the Caribbean where they practice this sport and I must say Curaçao is the spot. It has the potential of becoming the number one destination for rock climbing,” said Wilmer who was the head coach for the national rock climbing team in Venezuela.

P1100303The current situation in Venezuela has forced Wilmer to look elsewhere to practice his favorite sport. And he found it right on the coast of his country.

Sergio lives in Chicago but travels constantly to Curaçao to work on this project. He has been rock climbing for 20 years now. He also envisions Curaçao as one of the best spots on the island for rock climbing.

Currently, they are working on installing routes on various rock walls on the island. They started at Piscadera. Here they found the perfect location for seasoned rock climbers. “Piscadera is not easy. You need to be an expert to be able to climb this. This site is amazing for international rock climbers. We already see when Curaçao is promoting itself as a destination for rock climbing,” said Sergio.

Unique Curaçao which is the keeper of several nature areas joined the two men in their efforts and showed them other perfect locations for rock

climbing like Roi Rincon near the airport. Here they found what has now become the famous rock they named ‘Totem”. This rock is perfect for beginners or for those who just want to try out what this sport is all about.

Wandering around the island the two men found what has now become their dream spot. They will now focus their attention towards the Table Mountain (Tafelberg). This hill has the most perfect rock wall for this sport.

Sergio and Wilmer started just the two of them. Now they have a group of locals behind them working on making Curaçao truly a rock climbing destination, and who knows maybe one day the number one of the Caribbean.
